Modern man does not know what to believe about himself, or how to resolve the contradictions within, or how to live at peace with other. This pessimism contrast sharply with the Christian perspective which says, "Yes, we believe in man. We believe that this creature, though spoiled by sin, may be renewed through Christ and have a glorious future because he is made in the likeness of God". The aim of this volume, then, is to explore some os the issues relating to man, his relationships and his life as a human being, from a christian perspective.… (mehr)

After a brief general overview of the Bible as a whole, each book of the Bible is reviewed, with sections on its main message, key passages, and an outline of its contents. It also has brief introductions to key issues such as Faith, Prayer, Resurrection, Sexuality, God the Trinity, Covenant and etc.

As St Gregory the Great said: "The Bible is like a wide river in which lambs may splash in the shallows and elephants may swim to their hearts' content." This book will be of very real service in helping first-time swimmers get into the water, and perhaps help some more advanced readers learn new "strokes" to take them into greater depths. ‘The Church in the Market Place’ is an account of a major project of renewal and growth for St Nicholas church in Durham. The author, who was Vicar at the time, went on (eventually) to be the Archbishop of Canterbury, so it's very interesting to read about some of his early struggles with faith and guidance.

This book describes a project that made the church more appealing to the local community. Naturally such a project was expensive, and the proposal was rejected at first… leading to a year of renewal and rebuilding of the congregation, before the building project went ahead.

The book is written in a clear and interesting style, recounting the author’s worries and his own growth in faith. He doesn’t over-spiritualise, nor does he preach - instead he lets the story stand for itself as a testimony to God’s leading and the unlikely things that can be done if people are willing to pray.

The book won’t appeal to everyone; it’s unlikely to be of interest to anyone who is not a Christian believer, other than those who live in the locality or who have visited Durham and are interested in the story of St Nic’s transformation.

But if you like this kind of book, then I’d definitely recommend it.

This remains an excellent book, and would not need too much effort to bring up to date. The rating is based on my previous experience of the book, back when it was new.
