I was a big fan of the Sopranos tv series and the lead character Tony. Really strange to say when he was not a civilized citizen of society. This book reminds me of his issues with what he was doing criminally and working through them with his psychiatrist. His ex-con, judgmental brother reminded me of Tony’s Uncle Junior who was forever criticizing Tony’s way of leading the mob. Plots, twists, and turns… this book has it all.
As a proud New Orleanian, that just happens to live outside the city (ahem, state… time zone…) once you’ve been blessed by dirty water, you never get it off. What is wet will never dry. I really wanted to like this book - Irish AND New Orleans? That’s literally everything. It’s was ambitious to write a fiction around the city, around characters who call this place home, but the truths here are often so much better than the fiction. I mean, where else can you say a new kid on the block music video was filmed a mile away from the gas station owned by the guy from The Wire?
What I’m saying is, I’ve heard these stories, I’ve lived the moment walking down Decatur and seeing a guy with his brain bashed in. You get redemption at places that aren’t there no more. I expected better because I know there is a better story to tell.… (mehr)
