Kurzbiographie
Reginald Valentine (Val) Clery was born on January 26, 1924 in Dublin. After serving as a commando in the British army during World War II, Clery worked as a radio producer for the CBC’s London bureau. Clery eventually immigrated to Canada and Toronto in 1965 where he continued to work with the CBC, pioneering the concept of the “callout” radio show as manifested in the long running show “As It Happens”. Clery is perhaps best known for his role in the creation of the independent review journal Books in Canada, which he co-founded in 1971, but during his career he also published books within a broad and esoteric variety of genres including ghost stories, picture books, and cooking books. Clery also served as a Jazz music columnist for the Toronto Star. Clery passed away in Toronto on September 29, 1996 at the age of 72.

Historically constructed narrative over dragons and their symbolism throughout time. It gives a coffee-table style exploration with plenty of neat pictures (wood engravings, paintings, drawings etc.) The book almost feels like a giant Wikipedia entry on dragons and you can find yourself "getting in a rabbit hole" of information. Picked this up at a used bookshop in Florida (and the place even looked like a dragon's hoard of books if said dragon hoarded books) and Worth a spot in your collection if you're a dragon lover like myself.… (mehr)

A slight book full of pretty pictures and some fluffy text to fill it out.

But what pictures! If you like artistic doorways from all over the world, this will be a beautiful read; if you don't, this will be a pointless experience.

I thought it was beautiful.

This was a lucky find. Eskimo Diary is Greenlander Thomas Frederiksen's illustrated diary from his youth as a hunter and fisherman in the fifties and sixties. It was published in 1980. Each page presents a facsimile of a page from the diary with beautifully handwritten text in Kalaallisut as well as a painting depicting the events of the entry. The English translation is on the facing page. The paintings are charming, almost childlike in their simplicity yet having all the details necessary. In relating his day to day life, he also describes the fishing methods used as well as legends and history.

Fascinating, and lovely to look at.

While using a too-broad (in my opinion)definition of dragon, this book none the less provided a good deal of interesting information on a wide variety of dragon myths. Also amusingly tongue-in-cheek at times.
