Magnificent Churches on the Prairie A story of immigrant priests, builders and homesteaders, by James Coomber and Sheldon Green (read 25 Apr 2005) This book, put out by Concordia College, a Lutheran college in Moorhead, Minn., highlights the work of a Milwaukee architect in the early 20th century and the Catholic churches he worked on in the central Dakotas. It made me want to take off and see the churches involved (those which have not been spoiled by modernization) such as "the Cathedral of the Plains" in Hoven, S.D. The accounts of the efforts made by the priests and people to build these churches in those days of economic travail is awe-inspiring.… (mehr)
