OMG, I find Gogol such a laborious writer. I could barely force myself through this story, and it is relatively short as Russian writing goes. I'm not sure why he is a trial for me...I read Dostoevsky with relish, loved [b:Doctor Zhivago|130440|Doctor Zhivago|Boris Pasternak|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1385508725l/130440._SY75_.jpg|3288400], and Tolstoy goes in my favorite authors of all time list, so it is not his being Russian. His [b:Dead Souls|28381|Dead Souls|Nikolai Gogol|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1387201057l/28381._SY75_.jpg|1001298] is one of only a handful of books I have ever DNF'd. I admit I am becoming less patient as I age; less time to waste, I suppose.

The story is absurd, and is meant to be. The nose takes on a life of its own. I'm convinced there are undertones in this story that would have been obviously satirical to his own people and time, and I think that is what fails here for me--it is a tale meant to be read contemporarily and it loses its edge out of its time.

A fun tromp through Russian satire. Noses seem to have minds of their own!

"Yet, even considering these things; even conceding this, that, and the other (for where are not incongruities found at times?) there may have, after all, been something in the affair. For no matter what folk say to the contrary, such affairs do happen in this world — rarely of course, yet none the less really."

The Nose is a hilarious book about a nose that has a personality of it's own. Does the nose know it's place in this world or does it want adventure? This clever story is about a man who looses his nose and finds it unexpectedly from his barber. Students grades k-3 would really enjoy a laugh to this hilarious book about an interesting nose.

Like the author himself says..

And the strangest, most unintelligible fact of all is that authors actually can select such occurrences for their subject! I confess this too to pass my comprehension, to——But no; I will say just that I do not understand it. In the first place, a course of the sort never benefits the country. And in the second place—in the second place, a course of the sort never benefits anything at all.

I have no idea why he considered this a subject for his book.

This book is highly recommended to anyone who values creativity above proper form. I really enjoyed this book. The little girl is such a free spirit, completely unyielding in her belief that she is a composer though her mother insists that all she makes is noise. In truth, were this not told in the right way, it would have been a depressing book. The girl gets no encouragement from her parents and the piano that she so loves hurtles off a cliff into the ocean to escape being dismantled by an eccentric gardener, but in giving life to the piano and building a friendship between the piano and the little girl the author created a heartwarming (if a bit strange) story.

This was an odd story. I'm not going to lie. But if you can get past the idea of a wave being very "unwavelike" in many respects, then you'll like this book. The wave kind of dances between the friend that never leaves and a wave that acts like waves do, which is kind of a vague way to describe it but it's the best I can come up with. I've never read anything by the original author of this story, but this was fairly enjoyable. The bond between the boy and the wave and the gradual realization that being roommates with a wave just isn't working out are the core of this story. It's fun if you can handle the mind bending premise.

Starts as a good read aloud then gets overly long and poetic. A boy takes a wave home from his trip to the beach, the wave is fun, then moody, then it freezes and the boy and his parents return it to the ocean. Then the boy wants a cloud.

A young boy is on vacation with his parents and decides to bring home a wave from the beach because he had fallen in love with waves. But problems ensure as it's difficult to housebreak a wave. The moon, sun and stars pull the wave around the house and it wrecks havoc splashing all over the boy's home. The boy decides he's had enough and must come up with a plan for the wave, and possibly return it to its home at the beach. Great creativity and terrific illustrations helped make this book rather enjoyable.

This children’s tale version of Gogol’s famous story is mostly true to the original, but I have to say I found it somewhat disappointing. Perhaps in part because fantasy and absurd happenings are so prevalent in children’s literature as a whole, “The Nose” as a children’s story did not seem as interesting, deep, or symbolic as the original. The illustrations included were not bad, but they were also not anything to write home about. Still, I suppose the book has value for those interested in introducing their children to Russian literature at a young age.½

The book is about a boy who brings a wave home. The wave causes a lot of problems. It crashes everything in the house. Eventually, everything gets out of hand, so the boy takes the wave back to the ocean. He still remembers the wave as one of his really good friends.

This is a good picture book about a child and his wave. It goes through the phases of it being happy to a wave having to leave. The pictures are wonderful and an enjoyable read.

This book is a fantasy picture book. The art is illustrations done with pastels. The book is about a boy who brought home a wave. At night, the wave shimmers like a rainbow and sings songs but then the wave started to change and became bad. The reading level is third grade. The curricular connection is science because it would be a good book to read before teaching about waves and the ocean.

A little girl discovers a friend in a grand piano when she starts composing (e.g., symphonies of traffic jams) and the piano responds -- laughing and crying. But her mother claims it's just noise, not proper playing and tries to insist on piano lessons. But the piano sulks and goes flat and out of tune whenever the girl merely "practices". Finally when the parents insist on giving it away -- as they feel it's useless -- and the three of them are wheeling it down the driveway, the girl jumps on its back and she and the piano take off. (Like Thelma and Louise) they have a rip-roaring escape and dramatic ride to the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea. The girl jumps off and the piano plunges into the depths. So now the girl can go to Symphony Rock and sit and listen. "It's the susurrous sound of my symphonies sailng far distant seas, safe in my friend the piano." The final page shows a leaping grand piano swimming alongside dolphins in the sea.
