This is another gamebook that I didn't appreciate, but is actually pretty good. And boy is it difficult. Extensive mapmaking needed, and then getting through that damn portal is near impossible. The art isn't great either really.

I picked this up for the first time yesterday and played it through. I got all the way to the final boss before making a wrong choice. I did it again, the same same way, and made the wrong choice again. On the third attempt I made the right choice and completed the book. I think I was lucky, because this seems a complicated book. There is a riddle and a maze before you even begin, and it throws you quickly into a whole new universe, taking standard fighting fantasy tropes and playing with them, and YOU!. It was a lot of fun, with a variety of weird and wonderful illustrations. I do wonder if it was too easy though, or whether I just paid attention to the massive hint you're given early on (was that a hint? maybe it wasn't a hint). I hope to find the time to map this book at some point in the future and enjoy all the nooks and crannies of the multiverse!… (mehr)

This was my book at bedtime and it took me forever to get into this Seventh Doctor story and I kept imagining him as Third Doctor in my mind—perhaps because I haven't actually seen that many Seventh Doctor episodes in the first place. There was nothing special in the story of one group of humans enslaving the other, and I thought the story cheapened the Doctor's ability to regenerate his body by relying on that plot device on several occasions. I liked Ace in this story for getting things done, but was less impressed by the treatment of Tevana who just ended up as a prisoner and a piece in other people's games.… (mehr)

A story about the Doctor and Ace visiting twin planets and freeing the population of one of them enslaved by the other. All fairly standard, though there is some gruesome offstage violence, torture and sexual assault. Ace gets to have a little fun but both she and the Doctor are thinly drawn. I see other reviewers on the net complaining that this was a disaster; not really fair, it's just a little below average.… (mehr)
