Umberto D. (The Criterion Collection) von Vittorio De Sica
A masterpiece of the Italian neo-realist school. Mostly shot with non-pro actors. It is so emotionally devastating, a study of how we the aged deal with life. It is a hard film to watch but it is a must-see for cinema fans... and very especially cynophiles.

Durante l’ultima guerra Cesira, vedova coraggiosa e battagliera, si rifugia con la figlia tredicenne nel suo paese natale in Ciociaria. Di lei si innamora Michele, giovane intellettuale tormentato. Cesira decide di tornare a Roma. Sulla strada del ritorno madre e figlia vengono violentate da alcuni soldati marocchini. La piccola esce dalla terribile avventura totalmente sconvolta e si chiude in un silenzio apatico.
