This is a reprint of an earlier edition published by the US Government Printing Office. Unfortunately it does not cover the entire history of Johnson Space Center through the Shuttle program. It is a well written, and documented history through the mid to late 90's. It also explains why what was then the Manned Spaceflight Center ended up in Texas instead of staying a Langley Research Center in VA or at Cape Canaveral, FL. A good addition to any library focusing on aerospace related topics.

Two heads are better than one, but only when they can reach some sort of agreement.

I don't know that the presence of two authors affected the way this book was written, but it does seem as if it can't quite decide what it's about. Is it about the people who built the Voyager probes that gave us our first detailed look at the outer planets of our solar system, or is it about the explorations themselves?

As the book now stands, it's about both. The first half is mostly about funding and personnel issues, the second is mostly about science, but there is something of both in each part. Whether you like the result will depend on your taste. I could have used more science and less funding issues -- although, of course, without the funding battles, there would have been no Voyager probes. But your mileage may vary. If you want both, this book is for you. If you want only one, it might give you the information to pick out a better book for next time. But you may find yourself skipping some sections.… (mehr)
