This was an odd one for me. The writing was uneven and could have done with more editing attention. I did, however, like the atmosphere evoked by the author. It felt like an old 'Twilight Zone' episode ( the black and whites ). I felt for the main character and the situations he went through, but the events seemed disconnected in many ways, not a cohesive full length story. More like some odd vignettes strung together. The Indian stumbled in and out of the story without much sense to his arrivals or departures. It seems the protagonist never achieves his goal of finding his wife, who we never learn enough about. The ending fell a little flat as well. So, atmospheric, but not really worth the time in my opinion.… (mehr)

This is the story of a man who is journeying to his wife who has gone away to nurse her sick mother. It takes place in California during the gold rush days. It's a dark story about humans and the atrocities that they commit to themselves and to nature. There is a thread of hope that winds itself through the story, first by the Indian and eventually by the man himself.

Although the book was dark and some of the imagery quite graphic I enjoyed this book.

A book about the American gold rush that balances the truth and horror of that time in a way that makes the pages turn quickly but after a great build up I found the ending to be a bit anti-climactic. A very good little horror story that I truly enjoyed reading.

This book is a real birds-eye view of the gold rush. It captures a tumultuous time in California history - "gold fever." I am from the area and have been to these historic sites. In fact, my husband was a blacksmith "docent" in Coloma years ago. I think the book is quite poetically written.
