Edwin Drummond (1945–2019)

Edwin William Drummond was born in Wolverhampton, England on May 14, 1945. He studied philosophy at the University of Bristol. He supported his mountain climbing and writing with a series of jobs. He climbed the Arch Wall route up the Troll Wall in Norway with Hugh Drummond in 1972 and soloed the mehr anzeigen Nose on El Capitan in 1973. In the late 1970s, he started scaling landmarks as a form of protest. He climbed Nelson's Column in London to protest apartheid in South Africa and climbed Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and the Statue of Liberty to protest the incarceration of Elmer G. Pratt, a Black Panther who had been sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted of killing a teacher. His poetry and prose were compiled in several books including A Dream of White Horses: Recollections of Life on the Rocks. He died from pneumonia on April 23, 2019 at the age of 73.
