The joint lock series illustrated in this Mini-Manual originated from the ancient Korean martial art of Hwa Rang Do. Other than the books published by Ohara on Hwa Rang Do, this art is not well known to the public. there are less than a dozen qualified instructors of this elite art in the Unted States. Mike Echanis was one of the more well know instructors who taught Navy seals and developed teh Special forces hand to hand combat manuals. Hwa Rang Do instructors are presently trainng an officer corp of Marines at Camp Pentleton in California.

Hwa Rang Do is one of the ancient martial art forms that for centuries was considered too sacred to be taught outside the walls of the monastery. In the Sixh century A.D., a famous Korean Buddhist Priest, Won Kwang Bopsa, developed a sysem of martial arts that paralleled the Buddhist concept of nature as understandable in terms of a dialectic unity of opposites.
