ER program; I honestly forgot about this one, finding it in my library after a long hiatus. As I read, I remembered that my first impression of this collection was uninspired. The main theme of holidays could be interesting, but it's not very relatable. I'm not resistant to heart-warming prose, but I didn't find purpose or point in many of the stories. The writing was okay, but the trajectory of each story was a manipulation from "what's wrong" to "all better!"
Songs for the New Depression is a story in three parts, told in reverse chronological order, tells the story of Gabe as he dies from AIDS. An interesting idea, except the protagonist is so decidedly unsympathetic and marcissistic that by the time we learn part of why he's so unsympathetic in the third part, I still couldn't help rolling my eyes at him. Part three is definitely the strongest one by far, and I can't help but feeling I would've liked the book more if it had been told in chronological order.… (mehr)
I received this book from Circumspect Press as an early reviewer. I was very grateful to receive the book and eager to read it. While I looked forward to the idea of the book and it's "........Tales of The Holidays", it just wasn't an enjoyable read to me. I would read some of the short stories and then wonder to myself what was I supposed to get from that particular story. Had I not felt obligated to review the book, I would not have finished reading it. I suppose it's all subjective but these types of stories missed the mark with me. ( )… (mehr)
Beautifully written short stories depicting people in real situations, sometimes heart-rending. The stories are related to a holiday or special day. Exquisite details. I'll now see what else I can find by this author.
