Well illustrated as you would expect from an exhibition catalogue (I attended at the Royal Academy in 2018), with numerous essays which help understand Charles I’s interest in collecting and commissioning art. I especially enjoyed Gregory Martin’s essay on Rubens, as it introduced a whole side of his life about which I had previously been unaware (or had forgotten).

I recently read Palaces of Revolution by Simon Thurley and enjoyed being able to match up the art to royal buildings.

This is a book about the startling possibilities in global and historical bronze sculpture. It is a catalog to an exhibition that gathered together the world's bronzes into possibly the greatest single collection ever seen. Consequently, there is much to surprise and delight here. The works are well lit and photographed and the commentaries are insightful and illuminating. The catalog is well thought through and there are no 'over the fold' images. The book is itself a thing of beauty that lives as well as the bronzes it depicts.… (mehr)
