This volume doesn't stand on its own well; it relies on the reader already having been exposed to Bee and Puppycat through the show. For fans of the show, it's probably a fun read, but for non-watchers, it's a bit confusing.

A dose of Steven Universe is exactly what I needed to get out of my latest reading funk. The stories are delightful and the artwork is absolutely on point. I want to marry some of these panels, no lie. Looking forward to reading more SU comics!

I really wanted to like this. The characters are so flipping adorable, and I like the general magical girl premise of it. But I feel this is definitely a comic intended for people already deeply familiar with the web series (which I didn't even know existed), and there was very little in it for me to connect with. The first chapter was very engaging and introduced the characters pretty well, but after that everything just fell apart. I am going to check out the web series, and maybe I'll revisit the book to see if I appreciate any of the chapters more after that, but overall, I was not impressed.

Another too cute for words novel - I like all the temp jobs and cute antics.

There are no other words for this graphic novel than utterly adorable. Too cute for words

Wow, this seems more like a fanzine than a professional publication. There is plenty of effort on display, but the results lack in humor, adventure, and the greatness which is Steven Universe.

I love the Steven Universe animated show, but the stories in this comic book collection were just too frantic and juvenile for me. Coleman Engle's stylized art didn't entirely gel with how I see Steven and the Crystal Gems. None of it's really bad, but it was not what I was hoping for when seeking a Steven Universe fix.

I love Bee and Puppycat. The series has a really cool, wry sense of humour that I find really approachable.

It is a web series, so if you like the series, you'll like the comic books. It's more or less the same, and while I really like the script and the general concept, I read it mostly for the artwork. It's very punchy and dynamic and the artist is not afraid of colour.

The plot isn't always the strongest, but it was really cool to see other artists contribute to the volumes and see how they wrote and how they drew. I'm always interested in the composition of comic books, and that was a cool feature.

Check out the web series first, if you like that, check out these comics~ c:

Simply, I love Steven Universe. This bias colors my star-rating, of course, but if you don't like Steven Universe, I cannot imagine why you'd pick this up to read it regardless of my rating...

Also, a caveat: These stories are very much slice-of-life glimpses and not continuations of the story unfolding in the series. For me, that wasn't a problem, and thus... again, my rating didn't suffer for it.

That said...

Of all the artists represented in this collection, I'm most a fan of Josceline Fenton's work. It's simple and grayscale and onspot with looking the way the show does. Of the three headlining stories, "Open Mic" was probably my favorite, giving Greg Universe a little bit of character spotlight and love. Of the "also" collection, "Birthday Bake Off" captured the spirit of Steven Universe best, for me.

Overall, the stories are a great addition to the television series, and the book itself is beautiful. The additional art gallery in the back, which includes the variant covers from various issue publications of the stories, is full of gorgeous work.
