- Charlotte J. Erickson was born in Illinois, the daughter of a Swedish Lutheran minister. She graduated from Augustana College in 1945, and earned an MA and a PhD from Cornell University.
She also studied at the London School of Economics. She taught history at Vassar College for two years before returning to England in 1952 to marry Louis Watt, with whom she had two sons. She taught history as a social science, with special reference to the Anglo-American experience, for 27 years at the London School of Economics and for 7 more years at Cambridge University. She was named to the Paul Mellon Chair of American History at Cambridge. Her books included American Industry and the European Immigrant, 1860-65 (1957) and Invisible Immigrants: the Adaptation of English and Scottish Immigrants in 19th-Century America (1972).
