A YA supernatural horror, I found this very enjoyable.

17-year-old Laney is obsessed with the legend of the Grey Lady, a ghostly figure said to haunt the local area. She takes her best friend and reluctant companion Cassie on many late-night expeditions to hunt the ghost.

The girls pay a visit to the travelling carnival, and meet some strange and unusual characters - intimidating men that can change their faces.

This is a story of teenage obsession, both obsession with an idea and obsession with a person, of friendships and hard decisions.

The suspension was built nicely throughout the story and while not everything was explained, it was a good effective horror and I'd happily read another of this author's works.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

I remember when I read this being confused to why storylines weaved within was abruptly ended with no reason and zero explanation. I do remember that it was not a HORRIBLE read just not really a well rounded story altogether. I still have it and will re-read it again eventually and possibly update this review if I make more sense of the missing pieces...

Oh my! That was weird! It was totally not what I expected. I don't know why I had it in my brain that this would be about two little girls (like ages 7-8) wandering around in the woods, meeting faeries. So, not! This was definitely a young adult horror story! After I got over my initial confused disappointment, the story grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go. I shivered and freaked and ranted and sobbed through the whole thing. Would I change anything? Well, being a lover of happy endings, I was a little sad at the threat at the end and the thought that she could never be safe again doing what she loved to do. (I'm trying hard not to give spoilers.) Maybe there will be a sequel where she wins once and for all? But then . . . it wouldn't be a horror story, huh.… (mehr)

I received a copy of this book as an early reviewer.

I really enjoyed the story and characters. It had just enough creepiness to keep me hooked. Some of the storyline was a bit superfluous and didn't really go anywhere. Though I imagine that it was there for character building.
Cassie is relatable as is her friendship with Laney. A lifelong friendship that mirrored the hardships that most teenagers face.
I like that the book kept you guessing and never really gave you an answer regarding what the carnies actually are (faeries? vampires?).

I'm hoping this is the first in a series that will delve deeper into the fantasy. It was definitely left open for further exploration into the world E.M. Fitch created.
