The Tale of the Tenpenny Tontine -Fitzsimmons
Audio performance by Tim Bruce
4 stars

Punny, very punny.

Quite frankly, I did not pay much attention to the convoluted murder plot, the mistaken identities of the real and fraudulent bastard heirs, or the financial details of the eponymous tontine.

The story is a parody, pure entertainment. I just sat back to enjoy Anty’s unique approach to detection from the viewing of the victims to the final denouement. “What ho, wary gallery of likely suspects!”

An added bonus of this book were the alliterative or rhyming chapter titles. Starting with “The Dual Duel Dilemma” they all rated at least one giggle.

Set in an 1920s English country house, complete with staff, this is a locked-room mystery with an engaging, debonair narrator — a footloose young man with a modest reputation for problem-solving is called in to help solve the crime by his old friend from university rowing team. Think Bertie Wooster with a brain!
Fun! (Except, perhaps, for the murder victim and the suspects, which included everyone at the house — guests and residents, above and below stairs.)

Tongue planted firmly in cheek. This was a lot of fun. From the opening sly nod to Piorot and Hastings, the puns and repartee just kept on coming. There’s an original (at least I think it’s original) solution to a locked room murder, an impossible art theft, and an apparrent (but not) suicide. Definitely not to be taken seriously, this was easy listening. A good book to relax with. I’ll be looking at the rest of the series.… (mehr)

Silly fun reminiscent of Wodehouse but better. Anty is just too much fun and the problem solving is so convoluted. The characters are so clearly defined that I wanted to share dad jokes with them and the twisty plot kept me engaged the whole time.
Narrator Tim Bruce added to the fun.
