Angus, a young puppy, is very curious about the world around him like who was that little dog in the mirror and “Things-Which-Come-Apart and those Things-Which-Don’t-Come-Apart such as SLIPPERS and gentlemen’s SUSPENDERS and things like that.” He’s also very curious about things outside, but there his ability to investigate things is limited by a leash and the person holding it. But one day an open door allows him to escape outdoors and find out what was making that quacking noise next door, and there he makes some surprising and startling new discoveries.

I thought this book was an enjoyable read. I would say that I wish there was a greater message that the book was trying to get across.

I loved this book as a kid, though I don't know enough to know whether the pictures of the people hold up these days. To me, it's a cute little adventure story. A little duck on the Yangtze river in China hides to avoid a spanking when he's late getting home...but then the boat with his family sails away and he must follow them down the river, dodging lots of different boats, meeting diving birds, and kind boys who think he's too pretty to turn into dinner.

I was disappointed to find that this particular edition is abridged--for some reason I remember particularly well a page in which a man who keeps cormorants feeds them slivers of fish in exchange for the whole ones they catch--but this page is gone, and all it says is that the birds could never eat the fish they catch because of the rings on their necks. I'll gift the book, but I'm sorry it's not the whole thing!

This is a beautifully illustrated book about a Robin's flight north in the spring to build a nest and have a family. Mrs. Flack incorporates landmarks and other birds in this book, to give a young child a lot of things to look at and learn about while also listening to or reading the story.

Since 1933, The Story About Ping has captivated generations of readers. No one can deny the appeal of the book's hero, Ping, the spirited little duck who lives on a boat on the Yangtze River. Ping's misadventures one night while exploring the world around his home form the basis of this timeless classic, which is brought to life by Kurt Wiese's warm and poignant illustrations.
This is the classic story about Ping, a little duck, who finds adventure on the Yantze River. One evening he does not want to be the last one to board his master's houseboat. Readers will be anxious to see how his individuality shines through. -- Scholastic, Inc.

I love this book. It is about a little boy who wants to find the perfect present for his mother. Animals are offering their suggestions to the little boy but his mother already has those things. He eventually finds Mr. bear who gives him a unique gift for his mother. I like this book because it is something may children can relate to while also allowing children to become stronger readers since the little boy Danny asks the animals the same things as well as he always go off with the same animals. Overall, this story is amazing at keeping the patterns the same and words the same just changing animals but the pictures help. I'm excited to use this in my classroom.

I vaguely remember reading this book as a child. I enjoyed it then but now have more reservations about the "master" and overall story line. I can't say I like the last duck on the houseboat always gets whacked. There will always be a duck at the end, therefore the master seems to enjoy the "spanking". Ping is so afraid of getting whacked he hides and is left behind. The depiction of the Chinese is also outdated and should be left in the last century. Sad to realize a book I used to love is not one I want children to read, unless it's to show what not to do. I love the illustrations and that brings up my rating a little.

I recently found a hardcover copy of this book to give to my granddaughter, so of course I had to reread it! And it holds up very well from my childhood recollections.

Ping is a little yellow duck who lives with his extended family on board a boat, with daily forays along the shore to forage for tasty bits. One day Ping "misses the boat" and finds himself alone for the first time.

The story is simple but not boring, about a topic that young children are familiar with: getting lost. And the illustrations reflect the simplicity of the story, richly colored by one of my favorite artists, Kurt Wiese. I'll keep my copy until I can share it with my granddaughter.

Ping is the story of a duck who does not want to be the last one on the boat. Whoever is last on the boat gets a smack as they get on the boat. One day when Ping realizes that he will be last, to avoid that smack, he stays behind all together. Unfortunately he almost gets eaten for dinner, and when he finally does reunite with his family he gladly accepts that smack as he runs up onto the boat last.

This story is a family favorite. Reading it aloud many times has given me the perfect call that is made when it's time to get onto the boat, and I think I finally can pronounce Yangtze, or at least I am consistent in the way that I say it. This book demonstrates that choosing to avoid a consequence could in turn have its own consequence. Beautiful illustrations and writing with lots of interesting exclamations, as well as the happy ending make it a book that will be loved for years to come.

Ping, the duck, is taken by his owner to feed along the riverbank. Later on in the evening, Ping is the last duck to return home, so he hides to avoid being punished. The following day, Ping becomes engrossed in watching a flock of fishing birds and is unexpectedly captured by a boy. The boy later on decides not to take Ping home for his family's dinner and releases Ping. The next day, Ping sees his owner's boat and hurries to return to his family, knowing he will be the last duck again; however, this time he accepts his punishment. Educators can use this mentor text as a way to explain the reasoning behind classroom rules and the importance of following those rules (someone could get hurt). Academically, this story can be used to

Ping is a duck who lives with his entire family on a boat on the Yangtze river in China. One day, to avoid being spanked for being the last one on the boat, he hid in a bush by the river bed. His family left on the boat, and because he was all alone, he decided to swim after them and try to find them. Then, he is caught by a boy and his family who wants to eat him for dinner. The little boy sets him free and he finds his family. As he is getting back on the boat, he is the last one so he gets a spanking. This book would be good to teach about Chinese folktales and the Chinese culture in general.

The Story About Ping by Marjorie Flack is a multicultural book about a duck who gets lost on the Yangtze River in China. Ping has a big family, and every day - after hours of hunting for food - he and his cousins and aunts and uncles must cross the bridge to get back on the boat with their master. One evening, Ping strays too far and does not make it back before the others. That's when he experiences a whole new side of his world.

The Story About Ping is full of onomatopoeia and repetition, making this story a charming example of how authors use different elements of figurative language to convey meaning. Its colorful illustrations also make for a great read-aloud.
