This book is great for young/ beginning readers. Simple sentences make it easy to start identifying words and animals sounds help them identify the animals. The touch and feel and lift the flaps draw readers in and help them interact with the book. There is not an underlying message because it is meant to be an interactive book.

My pre-schooler loved this; though I can easily see toddlers going crazy for it too. Tons of opportunities to touch, manipulate, and even SMELL in this book. (WARNING the smelling part is extra fun when you catch your big brother unawares!) I have a feeling we will not only read this again, but use it as a launching point to learn about the rarer animals included.

A fun book. Eight ingenious pull tabs, seven pettable textures, and an astonishing fold-out finale deliver interactive surprises on every page as a cast of irresistible critters use their heads to demonstrate opposites, actions, and more.

I was excited about this book because my daughter loves dogs and interactive books. I was still surprised by how awesome it was when it showed up!

It is a huge, sturdy book with tons of fun elements. The cover has two soft furry tails and a tail that wags when you move the tab. Inside are dozens of high-quality pictures of many types of dogs. There are several different types of furry textures, several moving parts, and even a dog with a sticky tongue. My daughter particularly liked this and has been disappointed recently as the stick wears off. The last two pages open up to an extra wide spread with a hidden non-dog visitor. The words are silly but not in an irritating way. She is eleven months old now and will be enjoying this one for a long time.

I liked this book. I felt that it did a good job of teaching both animals and the letters of the alphabet. It possessed the key qualities in a very basic non fiction book such as accuracy good organization and engaging to the reader. The way that the book was engaging was through the various animals it chose to represent each letter. The author used some of the common ones such as alligator for a and some unique ones such as a quahog clam and stink bug. This helps broaden the child's knowledge and encourage them to learn the alphabet because they are excited and interested in the animals connected to each animal. The book obviously went in alphabetical order which is very important when being used as non fiction (teaching) because children need to know the order that the letters belong in. The main purpose of this book is to teach young children some animals and their alphabet.

This book has fun interactive pages, touch and feel, movable parts in the book, and fun pictures. Some animals I have never heard of in the book. Many pictures that relate to each letter. Fun interactive pop up poster comes along with the book.

We've had this from birth (written at 22 months). Tactile for the young, some atypical animal choices for the older kids to expand their animal vocabulary beyond the typical. Take care with the legs on the kangaroos, I've had to glue them and my daughter is actually very careful with her books. A fun one when she's not really interested in a serious read but wants to flip through a book.

In my opinion, this is a good book. I liked it because it was interactive. There were pull tabs, touch and feel patches, and flip up tabs. I liked that the book described general differences in dogs. For example, a sentence said “Fluffy dog, scruffy dog, droopy dog sags, perky little puppy dog wag, wag, wag!” I also liked the illustrations. The author used pictures of real dogs of his friends and neighbors. However, I didn’t like that the book didn’t give you a lot of information on each type of dog featured on the pages until the end of the book.

This is a cute book and gorgeous design. However it isn't very durable for toddlers. Within minutes of receiving the book my toddler ripped the bear's face off the cover. The moving faces inside of the book are starting to get bent as well.

The story itself and words are fun. We've read it a few times and it introduces fun words to share-- tongue, colors, animals, etc.½

Such a fun (and sturdy!) little book, great for the younger set and most of the movements can withstand excited play. The dogs really show their personalities and fun nature...and some scratching and um...well lets just say nothing in a typical dog's day is hidden. My favorite movable is the wet dog shaking itself dry; if there was really water in this book, everyone would get wet! Lots of different dogs are showcased here, you are sure to find a favorite.

One of van Fleet's earlier offerings, the bulk of the book is much simpler than such intricate offerings as Alphabet or Tails. Each two page spread has three words: two adjectives and a shape. For instance, fuzzy yellow circle. Pull back the flap on the right side, and discover that the shape is actually a part of an animal's body. The circle is really the belly of a duckling! The word printed under the flap is the animal's name, so now the book reads fuzzy yellow ducklings, instead. Simple, but ingenious. With that repetitive layout, children learn about colors, shapes, and adjectives. The surprise of transforming from a shape to an animal is both thrilling and comforting in its reiteration. Also, the illustrations are endearing. The animals are frisking playfully. Then, at the end of the book, the author employs a long pull-out flap with multiple panels. On one of the white panels, a series of rhyming couplets encourages young readers to engage in more investigations. Count the number of bumpy animals, call out the names of shapes and animals, and turn the extended page over to see what the animals are up to - building a tower of themselves. The two final extended pictures depict all of the animals interacting with each other, and do take some time to examine the cute details in these scenes. I especially like the baby shark biting the nose of an irritated sheep. This is another fun book, simple in its text and execution, but packed with potential for learning and entertainment.
