Qian Gao

This book was written by a young girl that came to American when she was five, and then returned home to China for a visit at age eleven for a 6 week visit. The back of the book says you will hear her unique perspective on the differences and similarities of Chinese and American life. It talks about culture shock that was replaced with a deep understanding and profound joy of her native land. I had high expectations when I read it. Being a mother of 3 I should have known better. The book was very much on the level of an 11 year old. There were many complaints about getting up early and being left out of adult conversations. She was also obsessed with shopping which embarrassed her grandmother. For adoptive parents taking their girls back to China in this age frame I think it is a good read. You will get a pretty good idea of what you are in for unless you prepare. This book could help both parents and child to see what is in store for them. I'm going to keep this book and have my daughter read it before our Homeland Tour at about age 10. It is a good tool for starting conversations on expectations.… (mehr)
