Evelyn Picon Garfield (1940–2000)

This monograph is the result of five days of interviews with Cortázar at his home in rural France in the summer of 1973. I'm guessing that a certain amount of weed was sacrificed as well, but who knows? Hardly scholarly, what follows is a wayward interview punctuated with a survey of Cortázar's work to date. The notion of auto-writing and collage elements are explored, particularly with respect to the short fiction. What amused me was Cortázar's notion of the reader-accomplice and how the author "ought to contribute to his mutation, displacement, alienation, transportation." The interviews appear to be driven by Cortázar as politics and his personal life are delicately framed and immune to scrutiny.
