From a perfect start—“Oh Yuck! Sweetie, did we really have to bring our own road kill?”—through road trip and camping terrors with ghosts; to a middle that’s filled with a very scary sense of time running out for the protagonists; to an ending that’s got to be perfect in every way; Eric Garrison’s Sinking Down will leave you sunk in your favorite armchair unwilling to move till the story’s done. There’s mystery, suspense, good guys, bad guys and some curious in-betweens, great friendships, convincing relationships... plus, possibly, a ghoul or demon or ghost, or two. Add a touch of possession, ghost-hunting with a few dabs of of Wiccan, and some thoroughly intriguing musings on soul, self and the holes we leave in our lives, and you’ll be ready for a road trip in a van called Soccer Mom.

This series goes from good to still good to “When’s the next one coming out?” and these characters are perfect to hang out with. The author’s voice is convincing, smooth and clear. The dialog’s strong and natural. The adventure is cool and scary. And the novel’s punctuated with seriously evocative illustrations from Bonnie Wasson. What more could you want?

Disclosure: I hosted the author in a blog tour and was delighted to be given a free copy of this second book, to which I offer my honest review.

Spectral Delivery is set in the world of Eric Garrison’s Road Ghosts series and takes place after the end of book 2. But readers could easily pick up this tale and enjoy it on its own, especially if they’re not sure how to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

The new girl at the pizza place just wants to get off on time to hang out with her boyfriend. Her mentor seems just as keen to watch the clock, so all should go well. But knocking on the door of the Dudes’ home isn’t quite the same as walking the path to the old witch’s house, even if you do know she wasn’t really a witch and childhood tales had no basis in truth. Just an old woman. Just be nice to her...

The final customer wants all the fillings, and Enid’s going to learn more than she expected on this short trip into the paranormal. Luckily Brett’s not just a good driver. He knows his roads and his ghosts. And this story’s fun!

Disclosure: I loved book 1, am looking forward to book 2, and couldn’t resist a free copy of this short story.

Eric Garrison’s Reality Check is a great fun read from start to end, blending hard science fiction, steampunk, and everyday geeks in a tale of parallel lives, computer animation and thrilling imagination. From the very first pages I feel like I’m back in college, hanging out with the wise in the common room, bemused on the edge of such fluid, fascinating, and fun conversations that I smile just to be nearby. And each page gets better. Still, what can I say without giving secrets away?

The virtual realities of this supercomputer’s imagination have test subjects babbling insanities. But Lee’s sure he can figure it out—even more so when he finds he really rather likes the story he’s landed in when wearing the device. Then things start to go quite excitingly and interestingly wrong.

Told in the convincing voice of a modern-day genius engineer, with fantastic dialog, stunning plot twists, great characters, perfectly natural cultural references, and... well... whatever else you want, I’m sure it’s there... this is the sort of novel you really wish wouldn't end. And then it does. And then, though the ending is delightfully, enjoyably fulfilling, you desperately hope there’s going to be a sequel because it’s really that good!

Disclosure: I was lucky enough to get a free ecopy. Really lucky. Really good book!
