This is the story of Shaka Zulu, a great African warrior who faced many struggles during his youth but rose above all his challenges. Shaka’s talents and wisdom as well as his physical fitness led him to become a great and formidable leader throughout Zululand.
The author gives a detail description of the area where the Zulu tribe resided in order to set the setting of this story. I like the way the author presented this great warrior as a hurt and mistreated little boy, to a fit and skillful youth, to a great leader and warrior.
This story can be used in History to discuss the history of the Zulu tribe, and the English interactions with the Native American tribes. It can also be used in a Geography class to discuss the area where these tribes were located.
