This book is partly of the story of a young woman seeking her family's history in Afghanistan, which she left as a child. That aspect of the book is well done, with many memorable moments such as when the author met the Khadr family, when a young boy was astonished that she knew how to write and when she heard someone call a radio talk show to ask why people sell their daughters.

The book is also partly a commentary on the situation in Afghanistan. This aspect of the book is less compelling. It is important to remember that this book was written in 2006, and a lot has happened in Afghanistan since then. It is also important to note that the author was 25 when she wrote it; and that she is a journalist, not an academic. She, perhaps, lacked the depth of experience and/or training that would have made this part of the book stronger.

Overall, the book is episodic -- it reads like a complilation of articles. Maybe that reflects the fractured nature of Afghanistan itself? But I found the writing style somewhat clipped.

Hamida Ghafour combines a biographical exploration of her family's history with explanations of the history/culture of Afghanistan. If your knowledge of the tribal culture of Afghanistan is limited (like mine), then this book is a terrific, well-written introduction for you with the bonus of a personalized story.
