I finished the ARC of Devil’s Own Day by Joe Goldberg. This is another fine book in the Spy Devils series. I highly recommend this series by Joe Goldberg for anyone who enjoys a good spy thriller with a secret off-the-books group that works in cooperation with the CIA sometimes while also against the agency while pursuing justice. Truth and justice don’t necessarily align with the desires of the CIA’s leadership in parts of the story plot lines. This element of the story line makes the book that much more enjoyable.

This is the third book in the series and picks up where the second book left off. The Mexican drug cartel sicarios are trying to complete their attack on Bridger’s Texas compound. The leader of sicarios in the attack is killed. The Chinese agent who was coordinating with the sicarios is on the run to avoid capture. This is in response to the successful mission to prevent the Chinese and Mexican drug cartels from establishing a new drug route into Europe in the previous book.

The story starts off with Spy Devils regrouping after escaping the attack. They attempt to capture the drug cartel leader which fails with several of the Spy Devils captured. Bridger makes a deal with the cartel for his people’s release in exchange for helping with the capture of the Chinese agent. A second story line in the book is about the head of a Chinese spy agency who is a CIA asset and him trying to avoid being discovered by the Chinese and his escape from China. These two plot lines are tied together by the previous Chinese and Mexican drug cartel attempt to infiltrate the European drug market.

This story covers the world from Nigeria, Philippines, Macao, Beijing, New York, Australia, and Mexico. There are several plot twists regarding who the Spy Devils are working for and against in the book. The plot has them sometimes working in cooperation with the CIA and sometime at cross-purposes to the CIA’s desires.

I would recommend reading the series in order, but you can read this novel without reading the earlier novels. There is enough of the back story from the previous novels to let you enjoy the book.

I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I enjoyed Joe Goldberg’s new Spy Devils book “Rebellious Son”. This is the second novel in the Spy Devils series. If you are a fan of Brad Thor, Simon Gervais, Joshua Hood, Marc Cameron, Charles Cumming, Don Bentley, Kyle Mills/Vince Flynn, and Ryan Steck, it is very likely that you will enjoy the Spy Devils series. I have enjoyed the novels by these authors as much as I enjoy the Spy Devils series by Joe Goldberg.

The Spy Devils are a private group that is loosely associated in a love/hate relationship with the CIA through a senior member of the CIA related to Bridger. They take on assignments that are deniable to the CIA. In this story, it begins with a disruption of a drug cartel in Columbia that is tied in with a Chinese money launderer. The drug cartels in Mexico and Columbia are trying to expand into Europe using a master bomber known as Specter to destroy the European cartels and their production facilities. A secondary plot line is that Bridger is assisting a retired CIA officer in a personal hunt for Specter bomber who has killed a number of U.S. citizens over the years. The retired CIA officer helped raise Bridger after his father was killed working for the CIA. This hunt for Specter is done against the orders of senior people in the CIA. These two plot lines are intertwined throughout the book. The book is set in Columbia, northern Africa, and Europe.

This is very good quick fun read. The story is well written and has a little irreverence to the genre when it comes to portions of the dialogue. I don’t know how much of this irreverence is due to Goldberg’s experience as a CIA office and making fun of the bureaucracy and methods within the CIA.
