Ooh, I just got this first-reads/giveaway/ARC in the mail today - the cover is indeed ever so cute. Ok, all the illustrations are fun-ish. The concept is fun, too. But I'm sorry to say the author didn't pull it off. Now, when I was 11 or 12 I would have loved this, thought it was clever and thought myself clever for enjoying it. Now though, I kept wanting the point of each story or anecdote to be actually significant. I'd recommend it for people who think watching TV is a good use of their time, I guess.… (mehr)

First, let me start off by saying that I won this book during the first reads contest. However, I would have probably bought it anyway. I am a huge fan of time travel books. This book contained a series of short stories, and as is with all such collections that I read, some are good and some I don't really care for. Overall, I liked most of the stories. The only negative I can point to is that lack of science behind any of this. If someone traveled to the past, they just showed up and we are to accept the fact that they could do it. Not that I want a lessen in quantum physics, but I do like to have a little theory. Overall a very good book with some witty stories.… (mehr)

Even thought this book was somewhat interesting, I can't say it was very cohesive.

Selected Shorts and Other Methods of Time Travel had me confused most of the time. I would get into a story and it would just drop off with no real ending or closing. I really enjoyed the way the stories were written and I enjoyed the mini-stories between each short more than the actual short stories.

I’m still boggled as to what I should get from reading this book. Each story was a bit odd and some had that dry sense of humor. But, by the end of each I was thoroughly confused and constantly re-analyzing the stories. I then thought, well maybe each story is to bring to light what people don’t normally think about each day.

Each short story has an underlying meaning but some of them didn’t quite stand out as much as others. Overall this book had me feeling lost. I recommend this book to anyone who can appreciate the bizarre and metaphorical sense of Selected Shorts!
