Christmas Eve, 1988. Colorado construction worker Shelley Cooper loses his job for mindlessly stealing an air compressor and ends up running drugs for his brother. Then the drug money is stolen off him. One bad choice leads to another and another. Effective colloquial narrative and loop-de-loop structure propel the novel along on waves of betrayal and violence and unrequited love. The comparisons to Daniel Woodrell and Pete Dexter are apt.
