Mohammed Hussein Haikal

Said to be the first Egyptian novel, written in 1911, an Egyptian then studying in Paris. A straightforward story of village life in which a young woman is married to someone she is not in love with. She pines away and dies at the end. Some scenes are well-drawn and but the descriptions of village life left me mostly unmoved. A disappointment.
