EUREKA! Great things happen when science crosses history. This is an all-true story of glasses. Without glasses, everything can be a blur! This book is a "biography" of glasses, an essential invention. Ever since someone first noticed that a jar of water magnified what was behind it, people have worked to improve their vision. This book is a fun and informative look at the history of this wonderful invention.

This book tells the story of Thomas Edison's life in a simplistic way. It is easy to read and has pictures that would keep kids engaged in the history of someone famous, which can otherwise be boring to kids at times. It includes a timeline of Thomas Edison's life and accomplishments and fun facts and historical photographs at the end. This story gives background on Edison, like when he became interested in inventing things and things that he invented other than a lightbulb that is able to stay illuminated. Not only does it give background on his life, but it also gives a bit of detail on how some of his inventions work and what their purposes are. This story could inspire students to think of their own inventions for improving our lives.

This book is about a girl and her Mom who has moved from Oregon to California. In Melville, California they are crazy about butterflies. This town has many shops, restaurants, and even parks that are all about butterflies. In this book, Ellie (the little girl) learns to love butterflies while also learning some facts a long the way. I really enjoyed reading this book it not only had facts about butterflies, but it also displayed different vocabulary that applied to other animals as well such as migration. This would be a really great book to do a science lesson about the different parts of a butterfly and how they interact with their surroundings.

I'm always looking for new easy reader series, especially in the younger range, and while it took me a while to find a title from this new series, I'm very pleased with it.

In bright, splashy colors, this simple easy reader tells the story of Bird, an ostrich, who is easily startled. She is walking along with a big purple elephant friend when she hears a peep! She promptly squeaks out "Eek!" and buries her head in the sand, only to be encouraged and comforted by her friends, "Peek, Bird! It's just Ape." This is, by the way, inaccurate - since it has a tail it's more likely some species of monkey. Simple hints on each page give the reader something to look for as they follow Bird's alarms and meet Sloth next. Then comes Mouse, who turns the tables and frightens Elephant! It's Bird's turn to comfort and encourage her friend and they give up their "Eek!" for a game of hide-and-seek.

The art is bold and simple; Elephant is a big purple splotch, Sloth a lightly sketched gray bundle of arms and legs, and Bird a black ball with fluffy white feathers, long beige neck, and pink beak. Although there is a simple seek-and-find element, it doesn't detract from the text, which is helpful for very beginning readers. This is the easiest level, including only a handful of words, such as "bird," "peep," and "eek." There is plenty of repetition and the font is bold and black.

Verdict: Mildly humorous, with attractive illustrations and bold, simple text this is a good addition to fill in your very early reading sections. While some of the words, "heard" or "please" are a little more complex, most readers will be able to handle them, especially with the repetition.

This book was very informative as to who Thomas Edison really was. He is a person that is well known for inventing the light bulb, yet he was not the only one trying to invent it. There were many other people that attempted to keep the light bulb lit but Edison was the only one that was successful. By reading this book I also learned that he invented many more things that are often used today. This book would be great for students that are asked to learn about someone important in our history since it is easy flowing and short.½

This book introduces the concept of rhyming to early readers. The recognition of beginning or end sounds is important for the early childhood grades. Throughout the book, various words that rhyme with duck are demonstrated like “ducks in trucks.” By reading rhyming books such as Ducks in Muck, students can predict what rhyming word will come next and will help emerge their cueing systems. The pictures used in the book describe the meaning of the text very accurately. This can help encourage total physical response for students that may not be reading the print just yet but are using picture cues. For instance when the book says, “ducks stuck in trucks”, a picture of ducks inside trucks and are stuck behind the print.

I give the guided reading book Ducks in Muck a 5/5 because it introduces the concept of rhyming to early readers. Throughout the book, various words that rhymes with duck is demonstrated. For example, “ducks in trucks.” By reading rhyming books such as Ducks in Muck, students can predict what rhyming word will come next because the same rhyming sound is used throughout the book. The book can also be interactive for students because they are able to predict what rhyming word will be used next which increases the amount of engagement the student has when reading the book. Additionally, the pictures that are used in the book describes the meaning of the text. For instance when the book says, “ducks in trucks”, a picture of ducks inside trucks is shown. Visuals that describe the text can be helpful for ELL students because they are able to observe what is happening in the picture and connect the picture to the text. Connecting the picture to the text allows ELL students to better comprehend what is occurring in the text.

I gave this book 3.5 stars because I think it is a good book for children in grades 3-6. It has a good story line which kids help resolve the bakers problem of coming up with a new idea. This idea is a kid sized cookie! I think kids reading this book will love it and I know it is part of a series of other books that follow Flat Stanley.½
