Once in America, Paolo settles in Jersey city and attempts to find work amidst thousands of other immigrants who are also seeking work. But just at financial breaking point, he saves a man called Augie from an assault and helps to heal him, in return Augie finds him work and offers friendship. Then Paolo on a dark night is led by the Deva to the woman of his dreams, a young Italian woman called Maria, and once again he helps a stranger. But Paolo struggles with both of them about revealing who he really is, out of fear that the Don may come looking for him in America. Paolo courts Maria and supports her during protests against the owners of the terrible sweatshops and the horrible working conditions. But as things quickly go from bliss to disaster, it becomes clear that Paolo cannot escape his past, will he go to conquer the difficulties around him by living his destiny, or will he fail? Then Paolo forsees a fire at the Triangle Waist Company and he rushes to help a friend, unaware that his heroic actions will be broadcast to the world bringing with it danger, love and fate.
'Vengeance is Sacred' is a well-written historical fiction with very interesting characters, dialogue and vibrant settings. The author has captured the beauty of the Italian countryside, as well as the real struggles that immigrants faced in America in the early 20th century. Historic references include locations such as the infamous Ellis island and events such as the Triangle West Compnay fire. Paolo the central character is very likeable, struggling to find his own way in life, whilst always considering the burden of ensuring the safety of the Deva for the future generations. Peter has written a well-rounded novel full of mystery and suspense, a truly fantastic read.… (mehr)
