I saw the traveling exhibit The Vikings Begin while on vacation, was blown away by it, went and found this companion book in the museum gift shop, and read it while still on vacation.

The exhibit is of pre-Viking artifacts, making connections in history to what the peoples who became the Vikings were doing before the period of raiding began. A very short book, but with lots of jumping off points and recommended reading lists to learn more.
