Kurzbiographie
Helen Dunmore was born in Beverley, in Yorkshire, England and grew up in a bookish household. The family moved frequently for her father's work. She attended Sutton High School, London and Nottingham Girls' High School, then direct grant grammar schools.

She studied English at York University, where she developed a lifelong love for Russian poets, especially Osip Mandelstam. From 1973 to 1975, she lived in Finland and worked as a teacher. In 1980, she married Frank Charnley, a lawyer, with whom she had two children and a stepson. She became the author of 11 collections of poetry, 12 novels, three books of short stories, and numerous books for young adults and children. She also wrote literary criticism. Some of Dunmore's children's books are included in school curricula.

She taught on Arvon Foundation writing courses, set up a poetry group in Bristol, worked on the management committee of the Society of Authors and served as its chair. She was a trustee of the Royal Literary Fund.
She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1997. In March 2017, she published her last novel, Birdcage Walk, and her final poetry collection, Inside the Wave, appeared a month later, shortly before her death. Inside the Wave posthumously won the Poetry and overall Book of the Year awards in the 2017 Costa Book Awards.

Rezensionen

As a sixty six years old grumpy Yorkshireman I am sure I am not the target audience for this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Beautifully written atmospheric descriptive imaginative and intelligent story telling. A poignant touching coming of age tale, with a dark side hovering below the surface.

At the height of a heat wave, Nina arrives at her sister's house in the country to assist after the sister, Isabel, has given birth. From the first pages, the reader knows something tragic happens, but it's not entirely clear what. The heat and isolation of the house make for a claustrophobic setting, and Dunmore creates an unsettling atmosphere almost from the first. The reader slowly learns more about these two sisters and their relationship, with some flashbacks to their childhood. But Nina is an unreliable narrator and as time goes on, the narrative becomes even more disturbing and unsettled.

This was a great novel - a bit Gothic, gorgeously written, and with a compelling pace. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen.

This novel, as befits a book often described as 'Gothic', is a disturbing read. Rob and his younger sister, the narrator Cathy, have been abandoned to life in their country house firstly by their mother, who simply went away, and by their father, who became institutionalised. They are in the care of their grandfather, but actually cared for by Kate, their maid, and only friend. The ghastly Miss Gallagher would like to care for Cathy, but Cathy does not care for her. Rob and Cathy, finally, only have each other. I don't want to do a spoiler, so let's leave it there.

Helen Dunmore is mistress of the perfect description. Whether it's a winter garden, a scratchy outdoor coat, a fit of vomiting, or a cool appraisal of a fellow guest at a dance, Dunmore cam mnake you live the moment, feel the sensation. For this alone the book is worth reading. It's an involving and disquieting tale. In the end, I found the concluding chapter or so rushed and unconvincing, compared with the careful narration that had gone previously. But that's no reason not to read the book. Helen Dunmore's always worth it

What a little gem this is. Just four stories - short stories: the whole book only runs to 55 pages. Each one so different, so tender, each one with the capacity to quietly shock. I don't want to say any more. If you pick up this small book, keep it to read at some quiet time when you can savour every word.
