When private security agent Madelyn Li accepts the task of protecting her sexy neighbor, Carter Devlin on his book tour, she expects the biggest challenge to be babysitting his ego. But in Alison Henderson’s Unwritten Rules, Madelyn gets more than she bargained for. Someone is out to kill the former CIA operative who is now her client. As they travel across the country promoting Carter’s spy thriller, the stakes escalate making Madelyn wonder if her interest in protecting her client’s body is more professional or personal.

Henderson knows how to ramp up the tension. The last fifty pages left my heart pounding – no spoilers here, but because I’d grown to care for the characters over the course of the book, I was worried for them and had to know how Madelyn and Carter resolved their situation. Henderson is a top notch writer and I admire how she incorporated the novel’s many settings (Chicago, Washington DC, A Texas Ranch & Coastal California) into the action in a way reminiscent of the Jason Bourne series. The humor in Unwritten Rules both surprised and pleased me. I loved the witty banter and moments of levity. Henderson has a keen ear for dialogue. This may have been the first book I read by Alison Henderson, but it won’t be the last.

I received an ARC of Unwritten Rules from the author in exchange for an honest review and I'm so glad I did.

Does it make a woman weak to want to go after her heart even if it is a man that left her standing at the altar?

In this lovely romance set in the west we find that although a little foolish Jessamine Randall, pampered child of the local judge, finds that she can be strong and have a mind of her own when it is something that she really wants.

Jessamine plots a plan to chase after Morgan Bingham, former outlaw who ran with the James Gang, the man she loves and decided without letting her know that he just wasn’t right for her.

As if…Jessie finds herself headed into the annals of Missouri, where life isn’t at all what she expects or is used to. She soon learns she is in over her head. The childhood home of Morgan is falling down, food is scarce and things aren’t as civilized as what she is used to.

She is determined to win not only Morgan over but also his family. Morgan feels obligated to his family and is going to stay and help rebuild the family home. In the meantime Jessie is just a determined to prove to him that she is more than a pampered judge’s daughter. That she can become the wife that he needs and work right beside him to help his family.

Jessie finds herself slowly winning over his family with the help she gives. It isn’t all that easy and there are some rough times ahead. Sometimes you have to make those mistakes to figure out a way to fix them and endear yourself to those around. She even finds a way to stop the feud between Morgan’s family and the neighboring family, which happen to have a strong tie to Morgan.

Ms. Henderson finds a way to make you laugh, cry, hope and fall in love with this couple. I got so wrapped up in their lives and wanted to step in and whack Morgan up alongside the head to get him to see what he is missing out on.

Jessie finally feels that it is time for her to head back home as she is tired of waiting for Morgan to say what he really feels. Things have finally worn her down, but not before she has fallen in love with his family and made an impact on their lives.

Ms. Henderson finally hit Morgan over the head or it might have been his mother, but he finally comes to his senses, but will it be too late?

You will just have to read this delightful romance that takes us on a journey from one side of the tracks to the other and back again only to find that maybe…just maybe love has a way of sneaking up and it doesn’t matter how much or how little you have…Love is just that Love.

I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more from Ms. Henderson. She has a way of showing all sides of life and the way a strong woman who is determined can help show a family what real love is and help them to heal and rebuild their lives. Simply Wonderful.
