Rezensionen

It is easy to see why Henty's books were once so popular. This book was replete with exciting adventure. Many characters were noble and good, some were still fairly noble, but rather wicked, and others were trivial. Henty included a great deal of historical detail in all his books. In this book, the protagonist and his friends take trips and go hunting mostly so that Henty can describe the daily lives of ancient Egyptians. Henty was a Christian author; I quite enjoyed the protagonist's meeting with a troubled Moses, still an Egyptian nobleman, but fallen out of favor due to politics. Bring me more of this wholesome, yet lively, young adult fare!… (mehr)

At the Point of a Bayonet: A Tale of the Mahratta War is an enthralling historical novel that transports readers to the tumultuous era of the Mahratta War in India. With vivid storytelling and meticulous attention to detail, the author paints a captivating picture of the conflict, immersing readers in the rich tapestry of colonial India.

The Author, George Alfred Henty (8 December 1832 – 16 November 1902) was an English novelist and war correspondent. He is most well-known for his works of adventure fiction and historical fiction, including The Dragon & The Raven (1886), For The Temple (1888), Under Drake's Flag (1883) and In Freedom's Cause (1885).

The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of British East India Company's expansion and their encounters with the formidable Mahratta Empire. Through the eyes of the central characters, we witness the clash of cultures, the intricate political landscape, and the high-stakes battles that shape the course of history.

The author's research is evident, as they expertly blend historical events and fictional elements to create a compelling story. The descriptions of the Indian landscape, the opulent palaces, and the sprawling battlefields are vivid and evocative, transporting readers back in time and immersing them in the sights, sounds, and smells of colonial India.

The characters in At the Point of a Bayonet are well-drawn and multifaceted, capturing the complexities and conflicts of their time. The protagonist's journey from a young and inexperienced soldier to a seasoned warrior offers a compelling arc, while the supporting cast adds depth and variety to the narrative. Their interactions, relationships, and personal struggles provide an emotional anchor that keeps readers engaged throughout the story.

The novel excels in depicting the intricacies of war and military strategy. The descriptions of battles, sieges, and skirmishes are intense and well-paced, conveying the chaos and adrenaline of combat. The author's attention to historical accuracy shines through in these scenes, offering a glimpse into the realities faced by soldiers on both sides of the conflict.

While the novel delivers a gripping tale of warfare and adventure, there are moments when the pacing feels uneven. Some sections of the story may feel slower compared to the more action-packed sequences. Additionally, certain characters and plot threads could have been further developed to enhance the overall depth of the narrative.

Nevertheless, At the Point of a Bayonet: A Tale of the Mahratta War is a captivating historical novel that will appeal to enthusiasts of military history and fans of adventure fiction. The author's ability to bring the past to life, coupled with the immersive setting and engaging characters, makes for an enjoyable and educational reading experience. Whether you have a keen interest in India's colonial history or simply appreciate a well-crafted historical adventure, this book is sure to transport you to a bygone era of conflict, courage, and the pursuit of empire.
