Editors Hirsch and Logsdon have compiled a necessary read by any serious commentator on New Orleans or Louisiana. It will be considerably easier to assimilate by one who is a native student than one whose paradigm is what the authors refer to as from Anglo-American traditions.

The several contributors do a remarkable job of conveying the complexities of the social development of New Orleans, usually ignored by commentators. While the styles of the contributors varies expectedly and can be a little academic at times, only one Joseph Tregle's contribution was hard to wade through. He successfully rebuts overly simplified and never quite attributed claims with far too many words and academic sounding argument.

With that one exception the book is an excellent read and I'd recommend it to anyone seriously curious about the opportunities offered and contributions by this unique place and its people.
