Good overview of 50s / Eisenhower. Filled me in on Eisenhower's iffy relationship to the Brown decision and hesitation about integration. (dragged kicking and screaming). Still, a nice antidote to current knee jerk / non thought out policy prescriptions and sudden changes. Also learned about multiple instances of being ready to use tactical nuclear arms in murky situations (Quemoy, laos/1959) .. really? Author steers a usually good course about reporting and not frequently jumping in with the after the fact moral absolute judgements.… (mehr)

Very good, well written, easy to read, though a bit lacking.
Cover Ike's presidency very well. Quite interesting and I learned a lot. Unfortunately it barely covers pre- and post-presidency. I really would have liked more on his early years as these form the basis for decisions made later in life.
Would make a great companion read to a more complete bio of Eisenhower.

An important book detailing a side of European history not discussed in depth. I learned much about the end of WWII that I had never known before. The author discusses the "Liberation" of France and the Low Countries after D-Day in terms of how the locals were affected by the Anglo-American military machines; how hunger played a part of the liberation for not only people interred in camps in Germany and Poland, but also the western countries; how some of the liberators brought rape and robbery to Europe as soon as the Germans were gone; how the United Nations UNRRA mission did and didn't succeed in repatriating homeless people after the war; and how the Allies behaved towards Jews in Germany after the war. For people with interest in WWII, I highly recommend this book for a more complete view of the war that won't be found in other histories.
