Bruce Hopkins

A man's struggle to document an old family cemetery (the Old Prather of Greasy Creek, KY) before the Kentucky Department of Transportation moves it to make way for a new road. (actually the land will be covered up for on/off ramp I believe) The story itself is a good one--how Hopkins realizes (too late) that he should have been listening better to the family tales and paying better attention to who was buried where "on" the old cemetery. At times it is hard to keep up with all the family references - a family tree or two would have been a great help with that! Barring that, just read the story and gloss over the family who's who and admire a man who was determined that this cemetery was going to be treated right. The next-to-the-last chapter (Dorcus' Roses) was exciting as it comes down to him being a warrior for the family against the KY DOT. It was 5 years from the time he was first contacted to the time he tells us about in that next-to-last chapter. But he did not waste time in those years - digging through family history and arming himself with anything he might need to stand up to the KY DOT. I'm glad I read the book but Hopkins badly needed an editor for it.… (mehr)
