Roy Hudd (1936–2020)

It is rare to find a reference book that one wants to sit and read: this is one such.

Roy Hudd must be the leading expert upon the subject of Music Hall and Variety. In this book, he lists many acts, from the famous; Norman Evans, Frankie Howerd et al to such luminaries as the Four Botunds. Each is treated with equal respect and Hudd's light, humorous style. This is one of those books which is useful as a directory of acts and the sort of tome that, on a cold wet day, when one is feeling gloomy, sends shafts of nostalgic sunshine into the room.… (mehr)

This is my kind of comedians biography. It reads as true, Roy Hudd admits to faults, as well as talent. I hope that he would not mind my describing his writing standard as basic,because this is a book that does not need flowery language. The man has a fascinating story to tell, and so does admirably.
We do get to see behind the mask where, life is never perfect but, Hudd never becomes maudlin.

Roy manages to give some excellent glimpses of other show business people that he comes across. I particularly like the subtle way that he lets the reader know whether he likes the person, or not. It is never done rudely and always leaves the possibility that it is he that is to blame. He also handles his first marriage well; there is no sign of acrimony - a difficult stand to take, as I know only too well.

Anybody who loves British humour has to read this book - and if you don't love Brit humour, then reading this may help you to see the error of your ways!… (mehr)
