picture book (baby/toddler/preschool)
Love this! The veggie spreads just name the color in the text, and the child is invited to count/name the pictured food. Short and sweet, but with plenty of opportunity for interaction and conversation, and the illustrations are large, colorful and eye-catching. I will definitely get this for my storytime group.

We'll need...
purple [1 eggplant]
yellow [1 onion, 1 corn]
orange [3 carrots]"

The illustrations were absolutely beautiful. Single word pages progress through a simple story. Not great for storytime.

My new favorite Jorey Hurley book (maybe tied with Every Color Soup, Skyscraper, and Nest....okay, they're all good). As usual, there's only one word per page as the reader follows the bees on their journey to find a new home, build a hive, collect pollen, make honey, and lay eggs to hatch more bees; an author's note at the end includes much more detailed information.

The life of a bee and everything they do becomes clear in a simple, understandable way.

Young listeners will learn all about bees in this book and gain a greater appreciation for everything these little insects do. The text is kept to the bare minimum of a single word on each two-page spread, for example: collect or lay. From there, the illustrations take over. Each action unfolds and makes it clear exactly what a bee does. Sometimes, they collect pollen. Other times, they lay eggs. And still other moments, they can be found guarding the hive. To add to the fun, more information and details are offered at the end of the book, which older listeners can enjoy.

The illustrations are fairly simple and yet, allow the various activities to come across clearly. By placing a single word first, the listener has an idea of what to expect before grabbing the exact meaning in the illustration itself. Especially younger listeners aren't bogged down by lots of text, but still get the basics on what bees do and how the life of a bee is. Of course, there aren't many details, but rather, this approach opens up for questions and discussions. The information at the back holds more detailed facts, which allows readers (and listeners) who are more interested in bees to learn a bit more.

It's simple and does a great job a bringing across the activities of bees and beehives in a way which won't bore listeners and still teaches them something along the way.

I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed the concept quite a bit. So, I'm leaving my honest thoughts.

"We are making Every Color Soup."

Starting with a knife, cutting board, and a pot, we gather and prepare all the colors: purple eggplant, yellow corn and onion, orange carrots, white garlic and salt, red tomatoes, green celery and parsley, clear broth (or water), brown mushrooms and potato, blue lentils, and black pepper. "Chop, drop, bubble, yum!" The final pages include all the ingredients and the directions.½

Hurley shows us every step of the process, from an empty city lot to a skyscraper. Careful readers will notice how the seasons change throughout; the process takes a little over a year. A final page spread identifies each type of equipment (hydraulic excavator, mobile crane, etc.) used for each task with a picture and a glossary entry. Illustrations in Photoshop.½

Rabbits hop, nibble grass, warn each other of danger, and wait out the rain in this simple book. (See the author's other titles, Fetch, Nest, Ribbit, Skyscraper, etc.)

A simple book with gorgeous, clear, colourful illustrations. This is a story - told in single words and bright pictures - of making soup. It explores colours and different vegetables. This book and Fetch are my favourites from Jorey Hurley. Great for toddlers and preschoolers - great to read in a group.½

Robins arrive in the spring, prepare a nest, raise their young throughout the seasons in this beautifully illustrated picture book that is perfect for sharing. With only one word on each page it reads like a poem. The pictures lend themselves to adult-child conversation beyond the words.

This book is great for preschoolers/early beginning readers. It has one word on each page and it is all about birds and what happens in a day. It was not my favorite I picked out but I feel like younger kids might like this due to the illustration.

One word per page, this is a fast read that's perfect for babies. It goes through the day of a rabbit from eating, playing, hiding from predators, etc.

Versatile & Very Cute!

(Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for review through Blogging for Books.)

-- 4.5 stars --

If I had to choose just one word to describe Extraordinary Ordinary Moments: A Journal, it would be "adorable." Jorey Hurley's artwork is simple and understated - yet cute as all get out. Her previous titles include four picture books for kids - Nest, Fetch, Hop, and Ribbit - and the illustrations in Extraordinary Ordinary Moments are similar in style to what you see on the covers. (Of course I can't speak to the interior artwork, seeing as I don't own any of the books!)

Each page in this thick, 368-page journal features a different image or scene, along with a prompt. The general theme is "extraordinary ordinary moments": an event, chore, object, person, or experience that's so mundane that maybe you often take it for granted, or don't even register it at all.

Some of my favorite examples include:
- something nerdy
- comfort food
- something with nice curves
- something that puts you in a good mood (yeah, because there's an illustration of a dog! you got me!)
- something silly (^ditto!)
- a good walk (definitely should include a dog, okay.)
- something eternal
- something you carry with you
- a good excuse to order a pizza

You can take the prompts literally, interpret them loosely, or ignore them altogether; that's what makes this journal so versatile. The prompts are written in a smallish font and are rather unobtrusive so, if you're not especially partial to one (or all), just use that page for regular journaling. I guess the lack of lines might make this difficult, though all the white space is conducive to drawing, sketching, or scrapbooking, so there's a tradeoff.

The pages are made of a thick paper stock, and the book has a pliable but bendy cover; it's softcover, but not quite paperback. There's an image of an orange peel embossed on the cover, which might sound a little boring, except you can actually feel the texture of the peel when you run your fingers across it.

Many of Potter Style's journals are tiny, about the size of a mass market paperback; the small size of the paper, coupled with the thickness of the book, makes them very difficult to write in. Extraordinary Ordinary Moments is a little more generously sized, at six by eight inches. New rule: all journals should be these dimensions at the very least!

Though I enjoyed most of the artwork, there are a few pictures of animal-based foods that didn't come as a surprise, but turned me off just the same. I can pretend that the sizzling bacon strips are Lightlife Smart Bacon (delish!), but the whole roasted turkey is a little harder to rationalize away. I know not everyone's a vegan like me - I'm not delusional, okay - but it's still tedious to see images of animal suffering everywhere I look. Even in seemingly neutral places, like guided journals. (I guess maybe I can use that page for all my favorite AR quotes?)

I feel a little weird deducting a full star for this, though, so let's call it 4.5 stars, rounded up to five where necessary.

Shelf Awareness review 3/6/15

A little underwhelmed by this book. Could be a good read for younger storytimes (5 and under), with just one word per page, and the dog and the red ball visible on every page. The Photoshop illustrations are a little flat, but the dog still comes to life (especially when it encounters seagulls), and its joy is evident.

With minimal words,

"search
splash
swim
...,"

and beautifully simple illustrations, Fetch tells the story of a ball-fetching dog at the beach. This could be written about my dog. I love it!

When I select books for storytimes, I look for very different things in fiction and nonfiction. In fiction, I'm looking for a story, for repetition, for a hook that will draw kids in and immerse them in the book. In nonfiction, I look more for a starting point, an opening to build discussion on. While you can have good narrative nonfiction, in a storytime setting my preference is for more of a sharing experience where the book offers a basic narrative and set of facts and we expand on those.

This book, with its simple but lovely illustrations and minimal text fits well within my requirements for nonfiction.

The first spread shows a pair of robins with one egg in their nest and the matching text is "nest". The book continues with one word on each page following the robins through the seasons and showing their eggs hatching, baby robins being cared for, and finally building their own nests. The illustrations are rendered in Photoshop, but they look like simple cut paper images with the seasons showing most strongly in the changing "leaves" of the tree, represented by multiple colored ovals. An author's note expands on the first year in the life of the robin family and some additional facts about the birds.

Verdict: Use this in storytime to talk about the life cycle of birds, seasons, and to help children expand on images and make guesses, for example "The word on this page is jumping - who is jumping? (baby robin and cat) why are they jumping? Can the cat reach the robin? What season is it (spring) how can you tell? What other animals have babies in the spring?" A definite choice for your picture book or nonfiction section. Highly recommended.
