The resolution of last volume's cliffhanger isn't quite as good as the build-up was, but it's still quite satisfactory . . . and explosive.

The tone switches from drama to creepy humor in the second half of the book with a new storyline about a mysterious transfer student (the white-haired girl on the cover) catching Miko's eye with her distinctive look.

A delicious scoop of mythology reveals the relationships between various side characters as it sets up the price to be paid for the protection the God of the Mountain has given Miko in past volumes. I only wish the book wasn't so short! Give me more now!

I'm a little frustrated as most of this book is spent doling out tiny hints about the mythology, building the level of looming threat, and teasing big developments for next time. I'm not liking Rom Shindou, the con artist magician, but I'm hoping his mysterious agenda moves things along at least.

And there are still several very striking images and chilling moments to be had. Those shrine maidens!

If you are looking for a Halloween read, this would be a good series to dive into.

While not as exciting as last volume, the series continues to steadily improve as it digs more into the mythology of its supernatural aspects. I have some reservations about the new street magician character but everything else was very satisfying.

I need to ask my library to order the next one ASAP.
