George and his mother have a nest high above a park in the city, it’s time
to migrate south but George doesn’t want to leave his nest. His mother tries
to persuade him to leave but it’s not until a gust of wind blows George and
his nest adrift above the city that he finally learns to fly. He has a few
close calls along the way, including an encounter with a cat, but eventually
he and his mother set of on their journey south.
I liked the way the author used the city setting to show George’s story, the
build up to the end was just exciting enough and young readers will love
this story’s sense of adventure and uncertainty. The author/illustrator’s
subtle ink and watercolor illustrations lend to the story’s seasonal setting
of autumn with their muted soft colors.

These poems were so cute and reminds me a lot of Dr. Suess little rhymes and riddles. I think the best and easiest part of this book for children to understand is that the author uses many rhyme words, so it might influence children reading this book to try and create their own rhymes.

I love this book because it reminds me of one of my favorite childhood stories about Barney the Beagle.

“Dear Mr. Blueberry, I love whales very much and I think I saw one in my pond today. Please send me some information on whales.” It’s vacation time, so Emily has to write to her teacher to help when she discovers a blue whale living in her pond. Mr. Blueberry answers that she must be mistaken, because whales live in the ocean, not in ponds. Throughout the summer, Emily and Mr. Blueberry exchange letters, until Emily has a happy surprise to share with her teacher. In the process, Emily learns a lot about whales. And Mr. Blueberry learns even more about imagination, faith, and love.

See also: Let's Get A Pup, Said Kate by Bob Graham

Dogs and their people are pairs that mirror each other: Polly and Molly, Eric and Derek, Minnie and Vinnie. Mr. Scruff, however, is waiting to be adopted, and who should come in but...Jim? "And though it doesn't rhyme, it's all worked out just fine." But then, Mr. Gruff goes to adopt a dog...and finds a puppy called Tim, of course! Delightful, and heartwarming without being cloying at all.½

Over the years, I've collected quite a few children's illustrated books. I love both the stories and the illustrations. Quite a lot can be learned from these publications, both adults and children! It is time to get back to reading from my collection and then giving the books away to children who might benefit from them.

Leon is lonely. He is a single children living with his mother while his father is away in the service. He has a pretend friend named Bob who keeps him company and walks to school with him periodically. When new neighbors move in next door, Leon gathers the courage to knock on the door bell.
As he does this, he notices that pretend friend Bob is fading away and not with him.

Continuing to climb up the steps, he is surprised that the new boy in the neighborhood is named Bob!

When Stanley's mother has to go away on a short business trip, the young boy embarks on an imaginative voyage to Mars. His spaceship soon returns with a little Martian who looks exactly like him, save for the helmet. The Martian explains to Stanley's brother and father that he doesn't do things like wash his hands or brush his teeth, but otherwise he fits fairly well into Stanley's life. Until, that is, he gets into trouble at school, for arguing with Stanley's best friend. When Stanley's mother returned, how will the Martian react...?

A sweet story about a young boy and his imaginative games of make-believe, The Boy Who Went to Mars pairs an engaging tale with appealing, humorous artwork. Many children enjoy pretending that they are someone else - an alien (as Stanley does here), a princess, a ninja - and British author/illustrator Simon James captures both the fun of that experience, and the warmth and love of Stanley's family, who accept his game and (for the most part) play along. Recommended to anyone looking for picture-books about imaginative play.

I loved this book! Great for teaching students to write and to research. Emily, the main character, writes letters back and forth with her teacher about a whale she spotted in the pond outside her house. Emily has a vast imagination and looks to her teacher for information in order to help her whale. The main idea of the story is not as obvious or deep, which is why the rating lost a star. However, the main idea of the story would be to not give up on the things that you believe in, and to research the things you want to know more about.

Cute, cartoony animals live on the soft pastel river bank. When Beaver moves in, they welcome him. Beaver, wants to build the biggest, best dam and it affects the water flow for the other animals. It’s a cute story about welcoming, sharing and cooperation. Great for preschoolers but with a message for older people, too.

Rex is about a baby dinosaur who doesn't know who his parents are and ends up getting "adopted" by a t-rex. The illustrations in this book are very memorable, and they really add to the text. This would be a good book to teach children about what adoption is, or to read to a student who may be gaining a sibling through adoption. Simon James did a great job in writing a fantasy book that could easily be related to real life events.

Leon and Bob is about a little boy named Leon who moves to a new city. He lives there with his mom while his dad is away in the army. Leon has an imaginary friend named Bob. Being a new city, Leon only had Bob because he did not know anyone else. When he sees a little boy move in next door, he sees an opportunity to make a new friend. In a classroom, sometimes students come in late if they move in to town, it is important to make them feel comfortable and to help them make new friends like Leon did. Leon went from feeling alone, to making a new friend. At fist he was nervous, but because he overcame his fear, he was able to make a new friend and make his new city a better place to be.

Baby Brains is one of the cutest books I've read. Baby Brain was a little too smart for his own good, but no matter how smart you are, sometimes you just want your mommy. This book takes you through the very short life of Baby Brains and his amazing accomplishments even only days old. From a doctor to an astronaut he can do it all, but we have to remember, he is a just a baby. I feel like this book is saying take your time growing up, there is always time to be a doctor, cherish being young, loved, and taken care of.½

An adorable dinosaur book about a T-rex that roars and frightens all the other dinosaurs. One day, while sleeping in a cave, a little dinosaur (who looks like a T-rex) hatches and makes a beeline for Rex. "Dad!" he cries. Though Rex initially does not want the little guy, our little dinosaur follows him around and admires his roar, strength, and terrifiness-es. He asks if he will be as terrifying as his dad one day. Um, well, dad replies, you found me in a cave. I'm not really your dad. So our little dinosaur wonders where he belongs and goes to find out. Eventually, he got lost. But then, who should come through the brush but "Dad!" The story has layers of adoption, family, fathers, and love all throughout and would work great for storytime.

I know fishermen tell tall tales about 'the one that got away' but I never knew birdwatchers did.  These folks are not 'birders' like my parents, but I like their approach to the hobby.  Artwork reminds me of James Stevenson or Quentin Blake.
