Allen L. Johnson

Allen grew up in the small, Southern Illinois town of Lawrenceville where drugs, crime and violence were virtually non-existent. People didn't lock the door of their house or their car. If he did something bad on the other side of town, like play in the street, his mother knew about it before he mehr anzeigen got home. He didn't travel nor set out on any adventures until after he finished college and joined the U.S. Air Force as a communications engineer. That job gave him the opportunity to travel, and travel he did. In the past 45 years Allen has flown 5 million miles, including circling the globe five times, driven over one million miles and flown over the Antarctic and North Pole. Allen and his wife, Gloria Runge of Chester, Illinois, met on the rifle range at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana where Allen was studying electrical engineering. Allen worked in the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio designing and flight testing aircraft radios. After 37 years in the same job, Allen retired in 1996 to spend more time traveling with his family, five grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
