Kurzbiographie
Heather Kassner loves thunderstorms, hummingbirds, and books. She lives with her husband in Arizona, waiting (and waiting and waiting) for the rain, photographing hummingbirds, and reading and writing strange little stories.

•When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
My gram, a school librarian, always read me Grimm when I was little, and my love of reading and writing grew from those dark and magical stories.

•Was The Bone Garden the first book you ever wrote?
It was far from the first book I ever started. but it was the first one I ever finished!

•What sparked your imagination for The Bone Garden?
The very first line came before anything else. "She descended into the basement, tasked with collecting the bones." The story stretched from this sentence into its own little world—one in which I had to consider what kind of girl might be slipping into the darkness, and why she's be given such a task.

•What, the best advice you have ever received about writing?
Write down any and all ideas as soon as you can! My third book, The Plentiful Darkness (2021), came from a dream, and if I hadn't forced myself to grab paper and pen (when all I wanted was to roll back over and sleep) the idea probably would have slipped away.

•What are some things you love?
Cats & hummingbirds (but my cats love birds too, so good thing they stay indoors)
Sleeping and dreaming (but lots of dreaming Can be done while awake)
Eating, especially Mexican food (but not cooking)
Traveling (but home is my favorite place)
Family (no buts about it)

•Where and when do you write?
I have a little office upstairs where I always intend to curl up with a cup of tea and my cats, however I write on the couch or in bed just as often as my desk. I usually start writing in the morning, however, I write slow and with lots of breaks.

After the death of her mother, Louisa goes searching for her father. She ends up in a carnival where everyone has magic. Carnival workers are getting injured. Who is behind it? Is it one of her new friends? Louisa and her friends hunt for the evilness at the carnival. Can they find it? Can they defeat it?

I enjoyed this story. However, I went through half a box of kleenex during the first five chapters, so I was not sure if I would survive this book. Once Louisa begins her search, I was better able to handle it. She is led to this carnival and eventually becomes a performer in it as she has magic in her. Ox, Mercy, and Jess befriend her. When trouble comes, people blame Mercy. Louisa knows it is up to them to clear Mercy. When the evil doer is exposed, I was a bit shocked.

I liked Ox, Mercy, and Jess. Fiona and Darcelle, the adults, I am ambivalent about. Quiet Si is interesting. He is part human, part marionette so I was never sure which would show up. The story is interesting and kept my on the edge of my seat. I look forward to more from this author.

This is kind of a story about runaways who people a circus called the Carnival Beneath the Stars. The story centers around Louisa LaRoche who runs away to find her father after her mother passes. She has a supernormal ability to float. The carnival has an others with other different abilities. I fed the story intriguing even as an adult.

A fun and inventive story about Louisa, a girl who can float. After her mother dies, she finds herself at the Carnival Beneath the Stars and begins to find her place. But accidents keep happing, and her new friend Mercy is at the center of the accusations...

A few of the twists were a little predictable, but probably not for middle schoolers. The language is lush and vibrant and the plot is fast and engaging. Louisa can be a little self-centered, but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment.
