An account of a Jewish computer programmer who goes to work at Sony as an intern. His exploits and adventures living in Tokyo and then traveling in Japan are often humorous. His tale of living as an expat mirrors my own in Thailand though the cultures differ and there were different frustrations. However, both the author and I bemoan the fact that one never stops being a foreigner – no matter how fluent in the language or familiar with the customs.

A very enjoyable book! It ought to be required reading for Americans going to (and particularly, working in) Japan, as it included many practical details about customs, facilities, transport, etc.

This was a very amusing look at life in Japan, though a very different one to the way I experienced it when living there in 2001-2002. The author not only worked for a Japanese company but was there ten years earlier and living in Tokyo and no doubt had a very different experience than I did as eigo no sensei in Osaka.

That being siad, he managed to portray the challenges he faced--being the squeaky wheel, not speaking fluent Japanese and trying to work out the social and workplace hierarchies without coming across as whining.… (mehr)
