Dated, sexist. The fact that I finished this book says more about my compulsivity than about the value of the novel.
Only 1 woman character, a secretary who is a sex interest of a minor character. The men wear jumpsuits, pre-computer: document copying is done by a "Duplicating Department" of the US Gov't. The President could be modeled after George W Bush (or vice versa): bibilous charismatic Yale grad. Main character, D.D.Dorfmann, is a controlling, prejudiced brilliant scientist who somehow, in a scene at the end, is strong enough to repulse several others.
Premise: After a secret US weapon test causes massive earthquakes killing millions in CA, an alien makes his presence known, to ask for our help in repairing his spaceship. The President's advisors come up with a plan that will encourage the world co-operation needed to do this.… (mehr)
