No Contest: The Case Against Competition von Alfie Kohn
Kohn argues that competition is inherently destructive. He refutes the myths that competition is a prod to productivity, a builder of character and an unavoidable part of "human nature." He shows that gaining success by making others fail is an unproductive way to work or learn.
The content is invaluable despite the frustrating constant repetition of what problems there are with rewards and their side effects.
If you expect a simple counter solution to incentives and school grades the author explains there are none, because ultimately our idea of rewards is based on the fallacy that humans can be reduced to simple behaviours. Once we move beyond this things get complicated...

Wow. Sounds like a classic work on the craft of parenting. Marking it for a re-read in the next few weeks.
Brilliant. Having grown up with one parent who used physical/verbal punishment and another who used conditional love (offered as praise when good grades or proper behaviour was given on my part) I was so thankful for this book which just strengthened and reaffirmed to me that the style of parenting I use (unconditional love, respect and acceptance) was the right choice to enable my child to grow up happy and loved.
