Kurzbiographie
Goseki Kojima was born on the very same day as the godfather of Japanese comics, Osamu Tezuka.  While just out of junior high school, the self-taught Kojima began painting advertising posters fof movie theaters to pay his bills.

In 1950 Kojima moved to Tokyo, where the postwar devastation had given rise to special manga forms for audiences too poor to by the new manga magazines.  Kojima created art for kami-shibai, or "paper-play narrators, who would use manga play sheets to present narrated street plays.  Kojima moved on to creating works for the kashi-bon market, bookstores that rented out books, magazines, and manga to mostly low-income readers.  He soon became popular among kashi-bon readers.

In 1967 Kojima broke into the magazine market with his series Dojinki.  As the manga magazine market grew and diversified, he turned out a steady stream of popular series.

In 1970, in collaboration with Kazuo Koike, Kojima began that work that would seal his reputation, Kozure Okami (Lone Wolf and Cub).   Koike and Kojima were soon dubbed the "golden duo" and produced success after success on their way to the pinnacle of the manga world.

When Manga Japan magazine was launched in 1994, Kojima was asked to serve as consultant, and he helped train the next generation of manga artists.

In his final years, Kojima turned to creating original graphic novels based on the movies of his favorite director, Akira Kurosawa.  Kojime passed away on January 5, 2000 at the age of 71.  [from Assassin's Road, Lone Wolf and Cub v.1  (2000)]

Lone Wolf and Cub are a disgraced samurai and his adopted infant son traveling through Edo-period Japan (sometime between 1603 and 1868) working as a sword-for-hire. He kills lots of people, some of them try to kill him and his boy and fail (that’s not a spoiler, there are several more books after this so of course, he’s in no real danger), and that’s about it! And while it might be episodic, it is hard to not enjoy this work for its historical accuracy, its brilliant paneling, and frenetic action sequences, its occasional humor, and just how darn influential it has been on the medium of graphic novels and storytelling in general. For instance, The Mandalorian owes a great debt to Lone Wolf and Cub.

Ogami Itto was the shogun’s executioner and has chosen to live the path of an assassin, offering his sword and son, Daigoro, to anyone willing to pay for his services. Itto has more than enough skill to deal with the most feared foes, armed with his dotanuki sword and expert tactics. He does whatever it takes to get the job done, even if it means appearing weak. One case has him allowing himself to be captured by the enemy, dismantling them from the inside out once he’s in their lair. Another has him entering prison with some of the toughest criminals out there, getting unceremoniously beaten, then allowing himself to get put on death row after he kills a few of the guys that beat him after he gets the info he needs. The funny thing is, with all these dangerous situations, the guy’s rarely in any serious trouble because he’s just -that- good. This first volume of the Lone Wolf and Cub Omnibus contains 16 chapters in the series, with each chapter showing why Ogami Itto is probably the baddest fictional dude to grace any form of media.

But it's really the groundbreaking cinematic visuals of Goseki Kojima that make this work a major work of manga history. Powerful artistry is contained within these pages.

Lone Wolf and Cub, written by Kazou Koike and illustrated by Goseki Kojima, is indeed probably one of the best manga ever written; and most like the best about feudal Japan. The main character, Ogami Itto, a ronin (wandering master-less samurai) assassin, and is son Ogami Daigoro make this story the more compelling. Itto seem to be a crossover between Logan (aka Wolverine) and Samurai Jack while Daigoro is just a bad ass three-year-old who can fight like his father

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction or just into Japanese culture, landscape, and/or history. Also, this is one of the few manga with no anime tied to the title but there are live action movies.… (mehr)
