This review is a long time coming but I have been a little busy and only really managed to finish reading this now. Pathetic I know but such is life. I really enjoyed the insights in this book and even though the education system is not the same in my country there are many things one can take from this. The author has done her homework and has presented her ideas in an easy to really and precise and has allowed me to.gain.some insight into the American education system. A job well done. Gold star *… (mehr)

This book provides the curriculum integration that teachers are all looking for. While this is geared far more toward the social studies classroom, I was able to take some of the ideas and tailor them to a science setting in my classroom. The step by step instructions were easy to follow but of course you will have to adjust the rubric to match your district and state standards. I would recommend this book to younger teachers like myself who are willing to dive into new challenges and explore new ways of learning with their students.… (mehr)

Strategies for Writing in the Social Studies Classroom by Kathleen Kopp offers simple and practical writing strategies to use in teaching social studies. Many of these same strategies could be adapted quite well for other curriculum areas and cross-curricular themed activities.
Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of writing in socials studies, from note taking to planning and producing a written report. Each chapter has step-by-step directions, rubrics, student examples and printable templates. There are also chapters that discuss learning vocabulary and using writing to support the other core skills such as reading and listening. Each chapter also includes a small section on using the strategies with technology and ideas for differentiation, although each of those sections could be expanded on. I especially appreciated how some of the strategies used critical-thinking skills, and co-operative group work.
This is a readable, well organized and useful book and we are already incorporating some of these strategies into our middle-grade classroom. Highly recommended for intermediate elementary teachers and high school social studies teachers.
