I couldn't finish the book. The first chapter was great and then it went downhill from there. The book is supposed to be about Chinese restaurants at different places in the world. The first chapter was exactly like that. Good backstory and characters. Then we get to the Israel chapter. It starts off good like the previous chapter but then it just starts with boring history (not about the food at all) and I couldn't read it anymore. I thought may be it's just the chapter so I skipped to the next chapter and it was still boring to me. Not my type of food book I enjoy reading.… (mehr)

documentary filmmaker (himself having grown up in Hong Kong/Singapore/Japan and now based in Canada) sets out to interview a diverse group of people all over the world (born/raised in different places, but identifying with Chinese ethnicity). Though food comes up often (the Chinese restaurant being one of the most direct ways of finding Chinese people in, say, South Africa or Turkiya, the focus is more on the global migration of people with Chinese ancestry and their personal histories of being a minority Chinese in a place that isn't China. I find the writing to be full of lots of interesting tidbits but the stories do run together after a while and it is easy to lose interest after a few chapters.… (mehr)
