The Wishing Stone is the story of Dot and her family. Growing up in a small, isolated east coast community, Dot wishes for a best friend her own age. Amazingly, her wish is granted and Sara comes to stay with Dot’s family at their summer home on Gull Cliff Island. Their friendship serves as a catalyst for Dot’s personal journey towards adulthood, inspiring her to ask questions and try new things.
Dot is somewhere between childhood and adulthood, which is authentically represented in her thoughts and actions. She is conflicted about the mixed messages she receives from the adults in her life and she struggles to do the right thing even when it goes against tradition. Young people will relate to her difficulties and experiences as she sorts through these challenges.
But the real strength of The Wishing Stone is its setting. There is a strong sense of place throughout the novel, and readers will feel like they are part of Dot’s family, living in this wild, rustic, and unique part of Canada.… (mehr)
